Dohl (First Birthday)

In Korea, a baby’s first birthday (dohl) is a big milestone, celebrated with a lavish party, professional photography sessions, life-determining rituals and traditional costumes. To honor the tradition, we dressed Zachariah with the traditional outfit and decorated our table with some real/fake dishes. The rice cake was provided by a Ginza(Oakland, PA). We kept the party small and invited few friends and neighbors.

If you zoom in on his finger, you should be able to see a "gold" ring. This was the same ring that was given to me on my first birthday. My mom kept this and gave it to us this past summer for Zachariah's dohl.

Part of the tradion is to present the child with
(1) a bowl of rice = this indicates no hunger; meaning the child will be healthy
(2) pencil/pen = this indicates the child will be a scholar
(3) money = this one is obvious...wealth
(4) ball = this indicates the child will be athletic
See what he picked...

His second choice was the football and then the pen.
He also had the traditional cake.

Time-off in the Big Island

We took off for CA/Hawaii in late August. This was the first time for us in the Big Island and this was the first flight for Zachariah. He was well prepared. Ready to jump out if needed.

The flight from PA to CA was easy. But the flight from CA to HI was a little tad long. Luckily, we brought his portable dvd player along with a stack of Baby Einstein DVDs. This was a hit with his cousins.

And of course - a little swim time for Zachariah.
