Max's 1st Birthday (Dohl)
Another year and a big milestone for our "golden pig" or simply known as "piggy" by us. What a journey it has been for all of us. I recall the days after Max’s birth when I dropped Suzanne off at the NICU to check on him. It’s hard to believe our son had any health complications now. Every time we drive by Children’s Hospital – I’m always reminded of those three weeks where Max was kept in the incubator with the bright UV lights for his jaundice and breathing tubes attached to his face. It’s true time sure does fly when you’re having fun or; at least in our situation you have two boys to chase after.
Max just celebrated his birthday with few friends from his block and a surprise visit from his grandma & grandpa (Suzanne’s parents).
Here's a picture from Zachariah's 1st B-day.

Background of “Dohl”
Dohl (First Birthday)
In Korea, a baby’s first birthday (dohl) is a big milestone, celebrated with a lavish party, professional photography sessions, life-determining rituals and traditional costumes.
Part of the tradion is to present the child with the following items and to foretell what the future holds.
(1) a bowl of rice = this indicates no hunger; meaning the child will be healthy
(2) pencil/pen = this indicates the child will be a scholar
(3) money = this one is obvious...wealth
(4) ball = this indicates the child will be athletic
Max picked the ball and then grabbed the pencil.
